Edward Matthew Rice, born July 28, 1960, in St. Louis, Missouri, is an American Roman Catholic Bishop: Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of St. Louis and Titular Bishop of Sufes.[1] On Wednesday, December 1, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI designated the Reverend Monsignor Edward M. Rice to become Auxiliary Bishop-elect of St. Louis, Missouri, and Titular Bishop of Sufes. He succeeded the retiring St. Louis Auxiliary Bishop Robert Joseph Hermann, 76, whose resignation was accepted that same day by Pope Benedict upon his having reached the age of 75 in August 2009. Auxiliary Bishop Rice's episcopal consecration took place on Thursday, January 13, 2011, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis. His Excellency, the Most Reverend Archbishop Robert James Carlson, the Metropolitan Archbishop of St. Louis, was the principal consecrator. Their Excellencies, Bishop John R. Gaydos (of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jefferson City, Missouri) and Bishop Richard F. Stika (of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Knoxville, Tennessee), were the principal co-consecrators. His Eminence, Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura (the Vatican's highest court) and Archbishop Emeritus of St. Louis, and Rice's predecessor, the retiring Auxiliary Bishop Hermann, were also in attendance.
Auxiliary Bishop Rice was ordained a transitional deacon by Bishop J. Terry Steib, SVD, who was then an Auxiliary Bishop of Saint Louis and who later became the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Memphis, Tennessee. Bishop Rice received his Masters Degree of Divinity from Kenrick School of Theology in 1987, and then was ordained to the priesthood on January 3, 1987, by the late Archbishop of Saint Louis John L. May, who died a few years later of a brain tumor. He taught at St. Mary's High School in St. Louis from 1991 until he became assistant director of Cardinal Glennon College in 1995. He then ascended to director of the college in 1996 and continued in that capacity until 2000. In that year, he received an assignment as pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in St. Louis. Then in 2008, he stepped down as pastor to become Director of the Office of Vocations for the Archdiocese of St. Louis. On July 2, 2008, he was appointed as a Chaplain of His Holiness with the title, Monsignor. He was still serving as Director of Vocations when he received the appointment as Auxiliary Bishop-Designate, and he continued in that position until the end of the 2010-11 academic year, which is when he was then appointed to serve again as director of Cardinal Glennon College starting for the 2011-12 academic year.[2]
