The Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology or Eawag (German acronym for “Eidgenössische Anstalt für Wasserversorgung, Abwasserreinigung und Gewässerschutz”)[1] is a Swiss research institution for aquatic research. As part of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) domain (“ETH-Bereich”) it is an institution of the Swiss federation. After its foundation in 1936 it concentrated on wastewater treatment. Since 1988 it has developed into a research and development institute. Nowadays, 400 people do research in the locations in Dübendorf and Kastanienbaum.
Eawag states being among the world’s leading aquatic research institutes. Its research focuses on aquatic ecosystems, urban water systems as well as chemicals and effects. Eawag has twelve research departments, where research is conducted by natural and social scientists and engineers. This combination permits a wide range of water research.
Research departments:
Solar water disinfection (SODIS), a method of disinfecting water using only sunlight and plastic PET bottles, was developed by researchers at Eawag.
