EFQUEL

The European Foundation for Quality in eLearning (EFQUEL) is a not-for-profit organisation which was legally established on June 30, 2005[1] and is based in Brussels, Belgium. It is a worldwide membership network with over 80 member organisations[2] including universities, corporations and national agencies. The purpose of the foundation is to create a European community of users and experts to share experiences of eLearning. Two of the main initiatives of the foundation are the "UNIQUe"[3] accreditation for Quality in e-Learning and the annual EFQUEL Forum[4].

History

The organization grew out of an EU sponsored project by Ulf-Daniel Ehlers of the University of Duisburg-Essen. The project was expanded into the current foundation by the European Institut for eLearning, the European schoolnet, FIM Newlearning, the MENON Network, the University of Duisburg-Essen[5] and the University of Reading. The foundation has taken its first steps in the framework of TRIANGLE, a project funded by the European Commission.

In the end of the year 2009, more than 80 member organisations are participating in EFQUEL's network. Among universities like the University of Leicester or the Universita Oberta de Cataluniya, corporations such as Toshiba Europe, other European networks and political bodies (e.g. United Nations Institute for Training and Research)[6].

The current presidents are Dr. Ulf-Daniel Ehlers and Prof. Albert Sangra' (Vice-President).
