Founded in 1938, the company has ownership of one of the largest privately-held collections of rare Scotch whisky casks in the world.[1] The company has been laying down casks from premium Scottish distilleries for decades and has, in recent years, made its branded products available to whisky connoisseurs worldwide.
Originally based in Glasgow[2] In 2002, the company was acquired from American owners by Euan Shand.[3] Upon acquisition, the business ceased brokering whisky casks to concentrate on producing its own brands of Scotch whiskies. The company’s casks can be found maturing throughout Scotland.
Future endeavors of the company include building The Huntly Distillery, a completely environmentally friendly, carbon-neutral whisky distillery[4] that is expected to break ground this year.
Duncan Taylor & Co has received numerous awards within various editions of Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.
Most notably the company received a “Liquid Gold Award” in the 2010 Whisky Bible (awards are granted to any whiskies which score 94 or above out of a maximum 100 points) for a North British 1978, cask Q247, 54.7% abv from the Rare Auld range. The single cask grain whisky was also rated “Scotch Grain of the Year”.[5]
Run by Whisky Magazine, the Independent Bottlers’ Challenge awards are given by a panel of industry experts who conduct blind tastings. Duncan Taylor & Co has been awarded the Lowland Independent Bottlers of Year award in 2006, 2006, 2008 and 2009.[6]
Duncan Taylor & Co was rated Icons of Whisky Scotland Independent Bottler of Year 2009 by Whisky Magazine.
In 2009, Duncan Taylor’s International Sales Executive, Mark Watt, was titled Young Whisky Ambassador of the Year.
