Dumraon (Hindi: डुमराँव , Urdu: دُمراوں) is a city and a municipality in Buxar district in the state of Bihar, India. Ustad Bismillah Khan, the shehnai maestro from India was born on 21 March 1916 at Bhirung Raut Ki Gali here.

Introduction

Dumraon is an old town (one of the oldest municipality of Bihar) in Buxar district in Bihar (pin no. 802119). It is also one of the oldest princely states of India. It is a Block (Tehsil) under Buxar distt of Bihar ,just one and half Km south from National Highway (NH- 84(Ara-Buxar Highway)), 20 km north from NH-30 (Patna-Ara-Mohania) & almost 80 km from NH-2(Delhi- Kolkata).Plain fertile land, It is very famous for its mats and 'Dari'.Bihariji Ka Mandir , Dumrejani mai ka Mandir & Kaliji Ka Mandir are some very beautiful tourist and religious destinations. Beautiful landscape and old city heritage, classic Architecture(British Era)hold some tourist potential.

History

Horil shah was the founder of this big town, and so it was earlier known as Horilnagar.Horilshah was the first ruler of this town,who was a descendant of "Raja Bhoj Of Dhar" and came from Ujjain. Dumraon was a princely state which has boundaries of the Shahabad distt of Bihar or in a geographic way of saying this is the part of Bihar between the rivers Ganga & Son and some part of UP as well. like any other princely state in country It has its own stories of Fight & politics for throne.but the popular of all and which draws attention of Britons as well and for which the battle of heir reach court is The heir of Maharani BeniKuwari . In early 1900th the case was fought in the Privy council.Mahrani Beni Kuawari (she built the famous Banke Bihariji ka mandir in Raj garh) was a widow of the then Maharaja of Dumraon. Apparently she adopted a child from Jagadishpur Riyasat but she died mysteriously within 24 hr of adoption. so, according to the British rule @ that time the Riyasat came under the British rule but then a Sir Keshav Prasad singh, member from the Maharaja's family sought the adoption theory false and claim the throne. Case dragged to court and the adoption never proved as the main witness went missing and other contender of throne either don't came to court or gave the statement in favour of Sir Keshav Prasad singh. So finally Court Appointed Sir Keshav Prasad Singh, the Steward of Throne. the last Maharaja Kamal Singh grandson of Sir Keshav Prasad Singh is prominent person in society and was a two time Member of Parliament from Buxar. Dumraon Was a princely state till the British invoked in and then The Maharaja of Dumraon signed an agreement with British and The Riyasat of Dumraon came under the rule of British.In 1947 after the independence of India the 'Privy purse' issued to the Maharaja of Dumraon and Dumraon became a part of the independent India .Dumraon also played a significant role in war of freedom, (kapilmuni, Harihar prasad gupta where the few freedom fighter).Dumraon has one of the Oldest municipality of Bihar built by then the Maharaja of Dumraon. The great shehnai mastero Bismillah Khan belonged to this town.

As of 2001 India census,[2] Dumraon had a population of 45,796. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Dumraon has an average literacy rate of 54%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 64% and, female literacy is 43%. In Dumraon, 17% of the population is under 6 years of age.
