He had 18 caps for Portugal National Team, scoring 5 goals, from 8 April 1958, in a 0–1 defeat to Brazil in a friendly match, to 24 June 1965, in a 0–0 tie with Brazil in another friendly match. The days before the European Cup finals of Bern (1960/61), and Amsterdam (1961/62), Cavém used to be visited in his dreams by a friendly character, with little hair, and a moustache that told him not to shave his bear in order to be European champion. Benfica won the two finals.
