Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou (Greek: Διονυσία-Θεοδώρα Αυγερινοπούλου, born 10 September 1975), is a current member of the Hellenic Parliament since the 2009 legislative election. She has served as the Deputy Secretary of Volunteer and NGOs for the New Democracy (Greece) Party. She currently serves as the Deputy Head of Environmental Policy Sector since January 2011.

Early life

She was born in Patras, Ahaia, Greece, while she grew up in Zacharo, a town close to Ancient Olympia in Southwestern Greece, in the Prefecture of Ilia. She holds a “Ptyhio” (LL.B. equivalent) from the Law Faculty of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, graduated with highest honors, top 1 in class, and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Legal Studies, with Distinction from the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., and the Dean's Certificate for her outstanding services for the academic community. She is a J.S.D. (Ph.D. in Law) candidate in International Environmental Law, expected in May 2011 from the Columbia University Law School in New York, N.Y. During her studies she was the recipient of many awards and scholarships, most notably including a Fulbright scholarship, a NATO scholarship, and an Onassis scholarship.

She has worked as a researcher at the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy on legal and policy research on Global Environmental Governance issues, the Yale Law School on International Environmental Law issues, good governance and corruption, and the Center for Environmental and Land Use Law of the New York University School of Law. She has also been a Trainee at the Legal Service, European Commission, Brussels, Belgium and at the Institute of Foreign and International Law in Athens, Greece. In 2005 she was an Adviser for the European Commission Delegation to the [United Nations], in New York, attending UN meetings and representing and reporting to the European Commission on legal and policy aspects on environment and development (ECOSOC High Level Meeting), and oceans governance (UNCLOS Meeting.). Since 2004, she is the Executive Director of the European Institute of Law, Science and Technology, (EILST) Athens, Greece.

Leadership and present life

Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou is a Member of the Hellenic Parliament "at large" (Constituency: State, in Greek: "βουλευτής Επικρατείας".) As a Parliamentarian she is a Member of the Educational Affairs Committee and the Committee on the Reform of the Pecuniary System and the detainees’ living conditions. She is also the President of the Parliamentary Committee of Friendship between Greece and Botswana, and a Member of the Parliamentary Committees of Friendship with the U.S., Israel and Albania. In March 2010, Dionysia was assigned Deputy Secretary of Volunteerism and NGOs for the New Democracy Party and held this position until January 2011, when she was appointed as the Deputy Head of the Environmental Policy Sector of the New Democracy Party.
