Detinho played for a number of seasons in the Portuguese Liga; he self-identifies as Portuguese rather than Brazilian. He started his professional career at Vasco-SE in the state of Sergipe.
While at Leixões S.C., Detinho played both legs in the UEFA Cup 2002-03 first round, scoring one goal.
Detinho joined South China in 2006 after the team gave up its "All-Chinese" policy. He finished with a very successful season; he was awarded South China Star of the Month three times (September, April and May), finished as runner-up in the Hong Kong First Division League 2006-07 top scorer table and was selected in the Hong Kong Top Footballer Best XI Squad. He was also awarded his club's award as the Best Performing Player of 2006-07.
Detinho scored goals during the friendly match with Italian giants Juventus and David Beckham side's L.A. Galaxy. He was voted the man of the match ahead of David Beckham.
Detinho was released by South China at the end of the 2008-2009 season. He revisited Hong Kong in early September 2009 and received an offer to play for Citizen.
Detinho scored a hat-trick and helped Citizen defeat Sun Hei SC by 5:4 in a league game during the 2010-11 Hong Kong First Division League season. [1] Detinho also came on as a substitute in the 2010-11 Hong Kong Senior Challenge Shield final, helping the club overturn a 0:3 deficit to draw the match 3:3, then win the match after extra time and penalties by 4:2.[2]
