Delaware Route 44 heads to the southeast of DE 300 on Everetts Corner Road. It passes through a mix of woodland and farmland before reaching the town of Hartly, where it becomes Main Street. In Hartly, the route passes by homes and intersects Delaware Route 11. It then heads to the east out of Hartly on Hartly Road, passing through more rural areas. The route continues to its eastern termiuns at Delaware Route 8 near Pearsons Corner.[1][2]
By 1920, what is now DE 44 existed as an unimproved county road.[3] The road east of Hartly was improved into a state highway by 1924.[4] By 1932, the portion of road west of Hartly became a state highway.[5] When Delaware created its state highway system by 1936, DE 44 was assigned to its current alignment.[6] The route has not changed since its inception.[7]
The entire route is in Kent County.
