Deary is a city in Latah County, Idaho, United States. The population was 506 at the 2010 census, down from 552 in 2000.[1]

Geography

Deary is located at (46.800062, -116.558733),[2] at an elevation of 2,874 feet (876 m) above sea level.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Description

Deary is a small rural farming and logging town located 24 miles (39 km) east of Moscow and 43 miles (69 km) northeast of Lewiston. It has 2 schools, Bovill Elementary - grades k-3 and Deary schools - Elementary: grades 4 thru 6 and Deary Jr-Sr High. It is a quiet community that definitely has a small town feel but is not to far from "town" (Moscow) to be able to do shopping and work outside the town of Deary. Deary is located at the base of Potato Mountain, or as the locals call it, "Spud Hill" and close to outdoor recreation, including camping and fishing: between Spring Valley Reservoir and Moose Creek.

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 552 people, 214 households, and 156 families residing in the city. The population density was 921.6 people per square mile (355.2/km²). There were 235 housing units at an average density of 392.4 per square mile (151.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.20% White, 0.18% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.72% from other races, and 2.36% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.44% of the population.

There were 214 households out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.1% were married couples living together, 5.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.1% were non-families. 21.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $36,167, and the median income for a family was $40,750. Males had a median income of $31,875 versus $19,688 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,244. About 7.3% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.6% of those under age 18 and 5.6% of those age 65 or over.
