Correntes (word portuguese for "chains") is a town located in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Located at 257.7 km away from Recife, capital of the state of Pernambuco. It has an estimated population of 16.686 inhabitants (Ibge 2009).

The history of Correntes was begun by Antonio Machado Dias, a rich portuguese farmer, in 1826. Dias lived in the are where is Correntes nowadays and he commanded the building of a catholic church dedicated to his patron saint (Saint Anthony). From that church, a lot of persons came to live in that area,what permitted the appearing of village of Barra de Correntes, which would become the town of Correntes.
The main economic activities in Correntes are based in agribusiness, especially sweet potatoes, beans, manioc; and livestock such as cattle, sheeps, horses and chickens.
