State Highway 3 begins at an intersection with Camino Del Rio, on which U.S. Route 160 and U.S. Route 550 run, southeast of the Durango Mall south of Durango. It then travels northward along Eighth Avenue parallel to the eastern shore of the Animas River, which it follows closely for 1 miles (2.8 km). On the southern edge of Durango, SH 3 turns onto Santa Rita Drive, which points northbound traffic to the southwest. SH 3 ends 3⁄41⁄4 miles (0.40 km) later at US 160 / US 550.[1]
The route was established in the 1920s, when SH 3 connected Greeley to the Wyoming border south of Cheyenne. The road was paved from Ault to its southern terminus by 1932 and was entirely paved four years later. The road was rerouted through Brighton and Denver by 1946. This route was deleted in 1968 and reestablished through Durango by 1982, undergoing no major routing changes.[2]
The entire route is in Durango, La Plata County.
