Introduction

CleanWell Company is based in San Francisco, California. Original design work was done by IDEO.[1]

In April 2011 the FDA sent warning letters to several makers of non-alcohol hand sanitizers, including Cleanwell, for making claims not supported by sufficient data. If one types "Cleanwell" into the Search box on the www.fda.gov page, all three hits are about this April 2011 enforcement action.

Active Ingredient

The active ingredient in CleanWell is a patented formulation of thyme oil.[2] Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the Federal Register exempted thymol because it has a minimal potential toxicity and poses minimum risk, meaning it is considered safe for the U.S. population, including infants and children.[3]

Partnership

CleanWell has partnered with Seventh Generation Inc. and Method Home[4] to power lines of disinfectants using the same active ingredient.
