Awarded Navy Cross at Guadalcanal

After training at San Diego, California, Evans served in the field from January 20, 1942 until November 25, 1942, when he was killed in action on Guadalcanal. He was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism in capturing two enemy machine gun nests two days before his death.

Namesake

The USS Clarence L. Evans (DE-113), launched on March 22, 1944, was so named in his honor.
