Clare is a given name, the Medieval English form of Clara.[1] The related name Clair was traditionally considered male, especially when spelled without an 'e',[2] but Clare and Claire are usually female.
It may sometimes be given in association with the Irish County Clare. That name was derived through the de Clare family, from the village of Clare, Suffolk, possibly named from Latin clarus for the "clear" nature of the stream that flows through the town.[3]
