Civljane is a municipality and small village in Šibenik-Knin County, Croatia, with only 240 inhabitants (2011). It is the smallest municipality by population in Croatia[1]
As of 2001, there are 94 Serbs, forming 68.61% of the population, and 40 Croats, forming 29.2% of the population, 3 undecided.[2] There are 136 Croatian speakers, and 1 Serbian speaker.[3]
The municipality Civljane by the census in 2011 had 240 inhabitants, situated in 2 villages:[4]
Located in inland Dalmatia, north from the town of Vrlika, on the route between towns of Knin and Vrlika, Civljane village spread on 17.80 km2, on the field near the spring of river Cetina, on altitude of approximate 400 m, just under south base of mountain Dinara. Parts of a settlement are hamlets:
In the 9th century, probably during the time of Duke Branimir of Dalmatian Croatia, the Church of Holy Salvation (Crkva Sv. Spasa) was built in Cetina village, near Vrlika, then called Vrh Rike.[5] It is one of the oldest and best preserved monuments of the early Croatian sacral architecture.[6]
Orthodox Church (Hram Vaznesenja) on the spring of river Cetina was built in 1940, as a foundation of Marka Četnika and his wife Helen. The church was rebuilt in 1974.
