- The United States team breaks the world record they had set in the semifinals by nearly four seconds, winning the gold medal in the men's 4 x 100 m freestyle relay with a time of 3:08:24, beating France by 0.08 seconds. Five of the eight teams in the final finished under the previous world record, and a sixth team was only 0.03 seconds over the previous record. Day 10: August 18
- Athletics
- Table Tennis
- Like the women, the Chinese men win the team competition without losing a match, winning all ten singles and all five doubles matches.
- Weightlifting
Day 11: August 19
- Athletics
- Britain wins the women's 400 m for the first time as Christine Ohuruogu wins the gold medal to add to her 2006 Commonwealth Games and 2007 World Championship gold medals, though her victory, as in 2007, was clouded in her homeland by the fact she had missed 3 random drug tests in an eighteen month period between 2005 and 2006, resulting in a year long ban from UK Athletics, and a lifetime Olympic ban, later lifted by the BOA.
- Jamaica's Shericka Williams took silver and Sanya Richards of the United States took bronze.[211]
- Red-hot favourite Lolo Jones of the United States clips the second-last hurdle in the women's 100 m hurdles, finishing seventh; however, the US still succeeds in taking gold through Dawn Harper. Australia's Sally McLellan takes the silver medal and Canada's Priscilla Lopes-Schliep takes bronze.[212]
- Rashid Ramzi wins the men's 1500 m, giving Bahrain its first ever Olympic gold medal.[213]
- Cycling
- Chris Hoy wins his third gold medal of the Beijing games in the men's sprint event, becoming the first British athlete in 100 years to win three gold medals in a single Olympiad.[214][215]
