History

Children's Memorial Hospital was founded in 1882 by Julia Foster Porter as the Maurice Porter Memorial Hospital in an 8-bed cottage at the corner of Halsted and Belden streets in Chicago. It was the first hospital in Chicago dedicated to the care of children and pediatrics.[3]

Education

As the primary pediatric teaching hospital of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, the hospital offers a widely sought after pediatrics residency program. The medical school's Department of Pediatrics is ranked 14th in the 2011 U.S.News & World Report rankings. The hospital hosts pediatric clinical experiences for students from many regional nursing schools. Other disciplines such as physical therapy, respiratory therapy or radiology help to train students as well.

Research

Established in 1986, Children's Memorial Research Center is the research arm of Children's Memorial Hospital, the pediatric teaching hospital for Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. The research center is also one of 31 interdisciplinary research centers and institutes of the Feinberg School, where principal investigators who are part of the research center are full-time faculty members. Built upon a team approach, the research center generates knowledge that will lead to cures for the diseases of children with additional focus on the pediatric precursors of adult diseases. The research center actively encourages a synergy of ideas among physician scientists, basic scientists, technicians, nurses and trainees in various disciplines. Its thematic research programs bridge gaps between the biomedical, clinical and social sciences and provide an environment to accomplish common goals.
