Hussain was born in Sialkot, Punjab in a Gujjar family of subcast khatana and was elected as Speaker of the National Assembly on November 19, 2002,[1] succeeding Elahi Bux Soomro.
On October 2, 2007, 85 Pakistani opposition lawmakers resigned from the country's parliament to derail President Pervez Musharraf's re-election bid.
