The Mathur Chaturvedi Brahmins, or sometimes just Chaturvedi are an endogamous Brahmin community found mainly in western Uttar Pradesh. A Brahmin family name indicating that the title bearer's forefathers were proficient in all of the four Vedas (including the Vedic branch one is born into). This was considered a significant achievement and an elevated social status.[1]
The origin of Chaturvedis goes back to Mathura (a holy land of Lord Krishna). The Land/Bhumi Of Chaturvedis and have their majority . Chaturvedi families were residing near Mathura, and nearby villages like Chanderpur, Bateshwar, Holipura, Mainpuri etc. In 17th century when Aurangzeb attacked these Chaturvedi families. Those who left behind in Mathura were known as Kadwe (bitter) Chaturvedis as they accepted the new Ruler and those who fled the city and settled in nearby cities like Agra (Pinhaat, Talganv, Holipura villages), Delhi, Kota, Kanpur, Varanasi, Lucknow, etc. were known as Meethe (Sweet) Chaturvedis. They set up their own councils in villages near Agra. Other then these two major categories, there are other kind of Chaturvedi's also which include regional Chaturvedi's part of this community as well as Chaturvedi community from West Bengal who are totally different community. Also there is one more sub category which consist of people who knot the ties between Meethey and Kadve Chaturvedi families.
There is one more theory given by communities other than given by Mathur chaturvedi's!That Mathur Chaturvedi's came from greece,and are not exactly chaturvedi's,and when they came to india, they settled in mathura and saw that chaturvedi's where the highest Brahmin status in india, which at that time where the elite class and so they started writing chaturvedi as there surname which was a significant change in there status and also shows there adaptability of indian culture, and presently Chaturvedi living in the eastern Uttar pradesh(Kanojiya Chaturvedi) where the actual chaturvedi of that time,the case is also proven from the fact that Mathur Chaturvedi are very less in number , sinse Chaturvedi has been referred in Mahabhartha so taking this into account they have to have have big community which also goes in favour of Kanojiya Chaturvedi(large Number) ,there non-mixing nature even with other chaturvedi's shows there all together are different personality
There built differ from large range and depends upon there place of living and there workings,generally Chaturvedi's of Tasorkar are considered as tall and with heavy personality,Mainpuri Chaturvedi's are considered as sports person,Holipura Chaturvedi are one of the sharpest in all generally considered as highly intelligent and generally very united
Chaturvedi have culuture of sports and extra-cirricular, and perfect example is national level Cricket tournament ,authorised by BCCI and won by team Mathura
The rituals of each community have a major impact of the region The Chaturvedi community is a very well high social status community. Presently, the majority of Chaturvedis inhabit the fertile agricultural regions of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi & Orissa, where they are engaged in mainly tertiary sector activities (Govt. & Private Services) as well as in Medical, Technologies, Research, Defence, Politics, Law, Education fields, agriculture and allied activities. One generation back they were mainly in teaching & religious duties as per their traditions. Current Generation has many engineers, scientists, civil servants, writers, musicians, poets & politicians. Marriages still take place between the community. Name of the ancestral village specifies the family origin. Although both the groom and bride belong to the same community, their gotras differ. The Chaturvedis publish a monthly magazine of their own, called Chaturvedi Chandrika under the group called Chaturvedi Mahasabha which brings Meethey, kadwe and regional community under one flag. They also publish a yearly directory and held conferences.
Chaturvedi sings there ritual songs known as "HOLI" one of the famous holi's are "Morey Bin kahan jaogay" and "Holi khelan aayo shaam" Gereral Chaturvedi Famlies follow a strict Vegetrian diet even the onion & Garlic are not allowed and the reason given behind it is that they give human the negatve waves due to there Nastik nature There is a temple of what is known as Kull Devi's of chaturvedi's are under construction in Mathura under the guidence of Mr. Pathak! Chaturvedi's are generally known for there fun loving nature with the highest level of intelligency , there are many joint famlies in chaturevdi's due to there nature of helping one another in all the time Marriages in Chaturvedi goes under the strict rules and regulation from chaturvedi Mahasabha which says there should be no dowry, and there should be no show off's in marriages, which makes Chaturvedi Marriges a low budget affair, There are high number of female to male ratio in chaturvedi which is interstigly almost differs from the place of there residence(INDIA) There is big history behind each place where chaturvedi resides, and that can only be red in the text specifically writen in those ages.
There are some of the famous chaturvedi's like Abhinav Chaturvedi ,B.K Chaturvedi,Gerish Chandra Chaturvedi,Sahil and salil Chaturvedi(Provogue Head)Munindra Nath Chaturvedi(International ICAO Auditor),Tanay Chaturvedi(Singer),T.N Chaturvedi,Manjari Chaturvedi,Divyanshu Chaturvedi one of the youngest pilot of India and there are many famous faces other than these as well. The surname Choubey also falls under the Chaturvedi community.Some of them also use their gotras such as Bhardwaj, Mishra, Pandey etc. in place of Chaturvedi surname.
