The company operates health plans in Illinois, Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Florida, Ohio, Texas, Mississippi, South Carolina, Wisconsin, and Kentucky (Kentucky Spirit Health Plan). Centene also provides specialty services, including behavioral health plans, life and health management, long-term care programs, managed vision, nurse triage, pharmacy benefits management and treatment compliance, to its own subsidiaries on market-based terms as well as to state programs, commercial organizations, and other health care organizations.

Centene's health plans and care coordination programs are designed specifically for the Medicaid population.

The company is headquartered in the St. Louis, Missouri, suburb of Clayton. In 2006, it announced plans to relocate to Downtown St. Louis to the site of the former Busch Memorial Stadium to be part of the St. Louis Ballpark Village owned by the St. Louis Cardinals,[1] but in March 2008, Centene backed out of the project.[2] In 2009, Centene began construction on a new headquarters located next to its current offices in Clayton. The site includes a tower with 520,000 square feet (48,000 m2) of office space.[3] Centene also operates claims processing centers in Great Falls, Montana and Farmington, Missouri.
