Castagnola is a former municipality in the district of Lugano in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. Today it is a quarter of the city of Lugano.
It was first recorded in 1335 as Castigniola.
The municipality contained the villages Ruvigliana, Suvigliana, Cassarate, Caprino and Cavallino. It had 157 inhabitants in 1591, which increased to 214 in 1801, 419 in 1850, 1,060 in 1900, 2,926 in 1950 and 4,430 in 1970.
In 1972 the municipality was incorporated into the larger, neighboring municipality Lugano.
Amongst its notable residents is the artist Angela Lyn. [1]
