Carrefour Express, rebranded as Carrefour Market in December 2010, operates 32 supermarkets in Romania. Until September 2008, the supermarkets were branded Artima. Artima was bought by Carrefour for €21 million in October 2007, with the rebranding to Carrefour Express taking place nearly a year later. Carrefour Market stores are local supermarkets, and are thus different to conventional Carrefour branches in Romania, which are hypermarkets.
In January 2008, Carrefour Indonesia acquired 75 percent share of local retailer Alfa Supermarket, creating a new supermarket business chain next to the Carrefour hypermarkets in Indonesia.[1] The name "Alfa" is now converted to "Carrefour Express".[2] As of December 1010[update], there were 14 Carrefour Express stores in Indonesia.
These Carrefour Express stores were the first Carrefour's supermarket in Asia; earlier there were only Carrefour hypermarket stores in Asian countries.
Carrefour Express operates in the United Arab Emirates with its local partner Majid Al Futtaim. There are several stores across the country with more expansion in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.
Since September 2007, Carrefour Express also operates in Turkey, locally named "CarrefourSA Expres" with only one letter 's' – but written with an 'x', even though the letter 'x' is one of the "forbidden" letters in Turkey that cannot be used in official records. As of December 2011[update], there are a total of 189 stores, located in 37 out of the 81 provinces of Turkey.
