Caristii

The Caristii were a tribe reported by Roman historians in Northern Hispania west of the Deba and east of the Nervion rivers, in modern Biscay and Alava. Their historical territory today corresponds very well with the extension of the Biscainne dialect of the Basque language.

The alleged 2006 discoveries at Iruña-Veleia of old Basque texts hinted that they already spoke Basque in Roman times. However, all these texts turned out to be a fraud, as concluded by the 26 experts who analyzed the discoveries in 2008 [1] [2]
