Caripia is a genus of fungus in the Marasmiaceae family. The genus is monotypic, containing the single species Caripia montagnei, found in tropical regions of the Americas.[1] Formerly classified in the Stereales (a now obsolete order that has been merged into the Russulales), molecular analysis published in 2002 demonstrated that the fungus is a reduced form of the closely related Gymnopus.[2] The fruit bodies produced by the fungus contain polysaccharides that have been shown in laboratory tests to have antiinflammatory properties.[3]
