CJQM-FM is a Canadian radio station at 104.3 FM in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The station broadcasts a country music format under the slogan and branding, "Today's Country, Q104." Despite the "Today's Country" branding, the format is actually a mix of current and classic country hits, with the oldies dating as far back as the 1960s, and the station airs a popular country-oldies show on Sunday mornings.
CJQM's 100,000-watt signal is heard clearly from Montreal River, Ontario southward to Mackinaw City, Michigan, and is frequently heard as far south as Gaylord, Michigan.
The station was launched on May 13, 1965 as CKCY-FM by Algonquin Broadcasting, the owners of the city's CKCY. In 1976, the stations were acquired by Huron Broadcasting, who also launched CKCY-TV in 1978. Huron subsequently sold the radio stations to a new business consortium, CKCY 920 Ltd., in 1985. The station adopted its current callsign that year.
CKCY 920 Ltd. was subsequently acquired by Mid-Canada Radio in 1988, [1] and Mid-Canada in turn was acquired by the Pelmorex Radio Network in 1990. [2]
Due to the economic circumstances of the Sault Ste. Marie market, with competition from stations in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan severely curtailing the profitability of the Ontario stations, Pelmorex shut down CKCY in 1992. The company also entered into a local management agreement with Telemedia, taking over management of that company's CHAS-FM.
Telemedia subsequently acquired the Pelmorex group in 1999. Decision CRTC 99-38</ref> , in turn, was acquired by Standard Broadcasting in 2002, and sold both CJQM and CHAS to Rogers Media the same year.
CJQM has also broadcasted Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds hockey games during the hockey season for many years up until the 2008 - 2009 season. Starting with the 2009 - 2010 season, the neighbouring Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan station Rock 101 has begun broadcasting the games.
There is another Ontario station in Peterborough broadcasting the same country format with the "QM" in the callsign. Another "QM" in Ontario is CIQM-FM in London, and that format is adult contemporary, which is also featured on the other stations in Canada with "QM" in the callsign (CHQM-FM and CFQM-FM)
