CFJL-FM is a radio station in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, broadcasting at 100.7 FM. Owned by Evanov Communications, the station airs a soft adult contemporary format branded as The Breeze 100.7 FM. During evenings, a block of adult standards dubbed The Lounge is aired, followed by folk and blues blocks.

CFJL has a similar format to that company's CKDX in the Greater Toronto Area and CJWL in Ottawa.

It is housed at 520 Corydon Avenue in Winnipeg, with sister stations CKJS and Energy 106.

History

The station was originally launched in 2002 as CHNR-FM, a nostalgia station owned by CKVN Radiolink System Inc. [1] It was acquired by Newcap Radio in 2005, [2] and adopted an adult album alternative format on December 26 of that year with the call sign CKFE-FM "Cafe 100.7". The station then adopted a classic Country format and branding on December 26, 2006 and adopted the CHNK-FM call sign as "Hank FM".

In September 2007, CHNK-FM successfully applied to the CRTC for a power increase, citing reception difficulties in the market. On December 6, the station was granted the power increase, taking 100.7 FM from 1,300 watts to an average effective radiated power of 60,200 watts.[3]

On July 6, 2010 the station switched to a classic rock format retaining its CHNK call sign.[4] The new format features artists like Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Neil Young, and Van Halen. The station also plays pillars of rock ‘n roll, especially blues music, from legends like John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Eric Clapton. Newer songs from core artists are also included.

Winnipeg becomes the first market in Canada with two classic rock stations since 2007, when Quebec City lost two classic rock stations as those stations added current content. CJMF-FM became an active rock station from classic rock, whereas former rival CKNU-FM (now CHXX-FM) became an alternative rock station.

By 2011, CHNK-FM began shifting towards a mainstream rock direction by adding newer live versions of classic rock songs.

In May 2011, Newcap announced that it was selling CHNK-FM and CKJS to Evanov Communications, pending CRTC approval.[5] On October 24, 2011, the CRTC approved Dufferin Communications (aka: Evanov Communications) to acquire CHNK-FM and its sister station CKJS. [6]

On November 26, 2011, CHNK-FM became CFJL-FM and was branded as "The Lounge 100.7 FM - Winnipeg's Christmas Music Station", playing non-stop Christmas music. CFJL-FM expected to switch to an adult contemporary format after the holidays.[7] The CFJL-FM call sign was previously carried by sister station CHWE-FM, which received its new call sign the same day.

On December 26, 2011, CFJL-FM changed their plan to be branded as "The Lounge", and instead re-branded their station to "The Breeze", with a Lite AC format.[7]
