CESNET is Czech Republic's National Research and Education Network (NREN) operator. It has been founded in 1996 by universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Association is a successor of activity CESNET provided by Czech Technical University, started as FESNET in 1992.

CESNET has several research activities. From hybrid networking, programmable hardware, metacomputing to middleware and video transmissions CESNET is doing wide spectrum in research in networking.

From 1992 to 1999 there was commercial network CESNET, but this activity has been sold in beginning of 1999 and from that time is CESNET fully focused to academic networking.

Fiber optic backbone ring based on DWDM technology connects Prague, Brno, Olomouc and Hradec Králové with bandwidth up to 32 × 10 Gbit/s.
