On 9 August 2008 Anatolie Guidea ruptured his achilles tendon and could not compete in the event. The Bulgarian Wrestling Federation has asked another Bulgarian wrestler, Ismail Redzhep, to replace Guidia. However, Redzhep was involved in a car accident and could not compete either.[4] Eventually the freed spot was filled by Mike Zadick from the USA.[5]

Weightlifting controversy

The country was initially supposed to be represented by a full team of 6 athletes at the men's competition, along with two women. However, Bulgaria later announced that it was withdrawing its entire weightlifting delegation, due to all its weightlifters having tested positive for a banned anabolic steroid substance.[6]
