History

The Buffalo Public School System was started in 1838, 13 years after the completion of the Erie Canal and only 6 years after the 1832 incorporation of the City of Buffalo. Buffalo was the first city in the state of New York to have a free public education system supported by local taxes. Although New York City had a free public education system prior to 1838, NYC obtained additional funding through private donations and sources.[4]

Buffalo Public School's first Superintendent of Schools, Oliver Gray Steele (1805–1879), was a prominent and successful business man. Originally from Connecticut, Mr. Steele relocated to Buffalo in 1827. He held three different terms as Superintendent between 1838 and 1852, during which twelve new elementary facilities were built, bringing the total to 15 elementary buildings. A building for a dedicated high school was also purchased during this time. Mr. Steele is credited as being the "Father of the Public Schools of Buffalo" as his reorganization of the schools in Buffalo enabled children to have access to a free public education.[4] Over 35 people have held the position of Superintendent of Buffalo Public Schools since that time. The Buffalo School Board voted to appoint longtime administrator Amber Dixon as Interim Superintendent of the Buffalo School District. Dixon will replace Dr. James Williams, in light of his September 2011 retirement amid a highly publicized, tax-sponsored retirement resignation benefits agreement.

Administration

Board of education

Terms are either 3 or 6 years. The Office of the Board of Education is in room 801 of City Hall in downtown Buffalo and meetings are on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. The meetings begin at 5:30 PM and are open to the public.

City Honors School is an academically-based high school located in Buffalo, New York. It serves Grades 5 - 12 and teaches according to the Board of Regents, as well as offering Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate classes. The current principal is Dr. William Kresse, and the current assistant principals are Mrs. Angela Hannah and Ms. Tandy Hamilton.

History

City Honors began as a series of enrichment topics at Bennett High School in 1973. Known as "Course Y", selected students took classes in the evening that dealt with enrichment courses and interdisciplinary topics. Increased student demand led to these workshops becoming a "school-within-a-school" at Bennett beginning in 1975, with a partnership being forged with nearby Canisius College.

In 1976, City Honors landed its own building, the former P.S. 17 located at the corner of Main and Delavan, which would allow the school to add grades 5 through 8 and strengthen its affiliation with Canisius. This made City Honors one of the first magnet elementary schools in the district. The school would eventually move to its current location at the Fosdick-Masten Park High School building during the 1980's, during which time it adopted the International Baccalaureate program.

History

The school was founded in 1910 as a combined printing class between Public School #5 and Public School #44 on Elm Street in Buffalo. In 1914, it became known as the Elm Technical School. A $1,000,000 construction project was begun to construct a new facility for the school, with the land being donated by Henry P. Burgard[44].

In 2009, a renovation was completed on the school that expanded the main office and created new science and computer labs, technology shops, and renovation to the automobile shops. Locker rooms were also expanded[45].

Hutchinson Central Technical High School is located at 256 South Elmwood Avenue and serves grades 9 through 12. The current principal is Mr. Sabatino Cimato, and the current assistant principals are Mrs. Charlene Watson and Mr. James Singletary.

History

The school was first housed in the then Elementary School No. 11 on Elm Street near Clinton Street. Dr. Daniel Upton, the founder of the school and its first principal, began operations with a faculty of four teachers and a pupil registration of sixty-four.

In September 1905, the school's name was changed to Technical High School, pending the move to a new building to be built on Cedar Street and Clinton Ave; its cornerstone was laid on November 14, 1912.[56] The Cedar Street building opened on July 14, 1918 with an enrollment of 1009 students, 863 boys and 146 girls. It offered evening classes, the first of its kind in Buffalo at the time.

The school received a charter from the Regents of the State of New York (now the New York State Education Department) under the name Technical High School of Buffalo in 1918, and remained in this building until 1954.[57] In the Spring of 1921, Tech began issuing Entrance Exams and became what is now known as a Magnet School, even though with its course load it would normally fall into the classification of a Vocational-technical school. That practice still continues today to help select classes, which now consist of roughly 200-300 students.

The school was in great demand during its forty years of instruction at this location. Most of Technical High School's equipment was transferred to the building formerly occupied by Hutchinson Central High School.[57] This building, located at South Elmwood Avenue and Chippewa Street, was completely renovated, remodeled and repainted. It is located within the boundaries of the West Village Historic District.

East High School is located at 820 Northampton Street and serves 610 students from Grades 9-12[60]. The current principal is Dr. Casey Young Welch, and the current assistant principals are Ms. Irene Gelber and Mr. Benjamin Willis.

History

East High School was constructed in 1926. In 1979, due to poor academic performance, the school was transformed into the Buffalo Vocational Technical Center, where students took vocational and career-oriented classes in addition to the core academics at their regular high school. The school was close to being closed and transformed into an elementary/middle school campus in 1999, but that decision was revoked by the Buffalo Board of Education due to mounting public pressure. In 2002, the Vocational center was ultimately closed, and the building re-opened in 2005 once again as East High School.

In the spring of 2011, it was proposed that the current principal be replaced and the school would become an all-male school. Although the principal was place on assignment within the district offices, there are no known plans to change the schools' enrollment demographics at this time.

Other information

The Buffalo Public School System boasts the best academically performing high school in Western New York, the City Honors School at Fosdick-Masten Park, which is recognized as one of the best high schools in the United States. The school was recently ranked as the 11th best school in Newsweek Magazine's 2008 list of "America's Best High Schools".[61] Originally built in 1912 as Masten Park High School, it sits atop the foundation of the original school that was built in 1895, but was destroyed by a fire in 1912. The name was changed in 1927 to Fosdick-Masten Park High School in honor of the first principal Frank Fosdick. The building was used as a girls vocational school from 1953 until 1980 when the City Honors School was moved from P.S. 17 on Main Street over to the current location. City Honors was founded in 1975 for academically gifted and talented high school students, however now accepts students from grades 5- 12.

Another important public high school is Lafayette High School, completed in 1903. It is the oldest Buffalo public school still in its original building, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Lafayette has the largest and most active alumni association of any Buffalo public high school.

The Buffalo Public School System also has 2 Montessori schools, one of which, Bennett Park Montessori Center, has been in existence for over 25 years. Public Montessori schools are not common in U.S. school districts.

Athletics

Buffalo Public Schools has an extensive athletic program. Students can participate in football, (including the Harvard Cup), basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, cross-country, track and field, bowling, swimming, volleyball, ice hockey and rugby.
