The village is based around the former RAF Binbrook station, with most of the population living in the former air force crew housing. Since the name of the station came from an existing nearby village, the name Brookenby was chosen in the 1980s when the new village was constituted. It is believed to be the name of an abandoned or 'plague' village nearby[2]
The former sergeants' mess is now Brookenby Church, part of the Walesby group of parishes.[3]
The Limelight Theatre group meets in the community centre[2]
The consistent period architecture has led to the use of the area for films about the 1940s.
A Trading Estate was developed on the remains of the RAF station.
