Assombalonga joined Watford in 2010 as a youth player at the age of 17 after making his way up from the Hertswood Impact Scheme.[3] He started his first full season at the youth team in the 2010/11 FA Academy Premier League season and finished 2nd top goal scorer [4] for the youth team who made it to the FA Youth Cup Quarter-Finals. Assombalonga has also made many appearances for Watford's Reserve team. At the end of the 2010/11 season Assombalonga, aged 18, was rewarded with a a 1 year professional contract at Watford F.C and was an unused substitute for Watford's final two Npower Championship games against Queens Park Rangers at home, and Preston away.
Assombalonga joined Ryman Premier side Wealdstone F.C. on loan in late November 2011 along with fellow Watford F.C. team mate Connor Smith.[5]
On 3 December 2011, Assombalonga scored his first goal for Wealdstone in a league match against Concord Rangers F.C.[6] and scored two goals four days later in a Middlesex cup match away to Enfield Town.[7] On 10 December 2011, Assombalonga scored an extra two goals in a FA Trophy 1st round tie against Uxbridge[8] therefore totaling a record of 5 goals in his first 5 games for Wealdstone in all competitions.
He has quickly become a crowd favourite at Wealdstone, and even has his own song - his surname sang to the tune of "Can't take my eyes off you" by Frankie Valli.
Assombalonga was born in DR Congo but has lived his entire life in north west London therefore being eligible to play for England or DR Congo. His father Ngondola Assombalanga was a DR Congo international footballer.
