Bridgeport Downtown South Historic District is a 27-acre (11 ha) historic district in Bridgeport, Connecticut that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
The district includes the United Illuminating Company Building and the Barnum Museum of Science and History, which are both separately NRHP-listed. The district includes Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals architecture, Late Victorian and Moderne. It includes work designed by noted architect Cass Gilbert.[1]
The listing included 50 contributing buildings and 12 non-contributing buildings.[1]
The work designed by Cass Gilbert is 149-165 State Street which in 1986 was a Peoples Savings Bank building (depicted in photo #11 of nomination-attached photos).[2]
The district includes a cluster of downtown Bridgeport resources.[3]
