History

It is a Parker iron truss bridge.[2] This wood-decked bridge was built in 1877 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. In 1937 the 378-foot-long (115 m) wrought iron bridge was disassembled, transported and re-established at its initial location to allow then new Highway 65 to cross the Little Fork River in this very remote wilderness area just 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Silverdale, Minnesota.[2]

A new replacement bridge is being constructed by the Robert R. Schroeder Construction Company of Glenwood, Mn just downstream from Bridge 5721.[3]

A new beginning

The future is bright for this 130-year-old bridge. It will again be moved and used for horses, just like the day it was first erected.

The bridge was identified by Mn/DOT as an historic bridge, marked for preservation.[4] After a laser scanning survey, the bridge will be disassembled, transported, then reassembled over Manning Avenue as part of the Gateway Trail. Construction began in August 2009, with plans to complete the project within 2 years[5]
