Brian McHattie is a Canadian politician, environmentalist and lecturer who is a Hamilton Municipal Councillor.

McHattie was born in Weston, Ontario and, in 1987, moved to Hamilton. He worked for Environment Canada on efforts to clean up the Great Lakes, with Environment Hamilton as the regional coordinator for the Canadian Community Monitoring Network, with the Hamilton Conservation Authority and the Bay Area Restoration Council (BARC). McHattie was also employed as a sessional lecturer at McMaster University in the Arts and Science Program.

He graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in environmental studies and went on to complete his MSc degree in planning and community development from the University of Guelph, where he studied the effects of globalisation on farmers in southern India. He is a Registered Professional Planner and a member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute and the Canadian Institute of Planning. Prior to his election, McHattie worked on his PhD in planning, investigating the issue of limits to growth in North American municipalities.

After unsuccessfully running for mayor in 1997, McHattie was elected as the Ward 1 Councillor in 2003 with 57.94% of the vote. He was easily re-elected in 2006 with 62.88% of the vote over closest rival, Tony Greco.

McHattie falls to the left among members of Hamilton City Council, frequently voting to end urban sprawl, support local economics and promote social services.[1][3]
