Brainwashed was started in 1996 by Jon Whitney as a domain to host websites for a couple of musical artists and soon expanded to include many more artists and small record labels.
In 1998, it began The Brain, a weekly online magazine featuring music reviews, new release news, and concert news from the staff and contributors to the various sites on Brainwashed.com. The popularity increased as it became the first weekly online music magazine to include sound samples in every review.
By 1999, Brainwashed began a full time Internet radio stream, Brainwashed Radio.
In 2000, reacting to price fixing lawsuits and other irresponsible practices, Brainwashed banned all major labels from coverage in The Brain.
2003 marked the launch of "The Eye": downloadable video interviews with and clips of bands. Whitney began hosting weekly podcasts starting in December 2004. In 2005, Brainwashed became a daily content provider.
In November 2006, Brainwashed celebrated its 10 year anniversary by holding a music festival called Brainwaves in its hometown of Boston and released the compilation Brainwaves.
