Catherine "Catie" Wayne (born April 28, 1992), better known as the character Boxxy, is an American internet celebrity known for her highly energetic vlogs.[2] Her rise to exposure began in late 2008 and early 2009, surrounding self-made videos featuring Wayne anonymously under the name "Boxxy".[2]

The videos were initially made to be posted to her Gaia Online profile to which they then lead onto the website i-am-bored.com, which then spread to 4chan resulting in a large online following and becoming an Internet meme.

History

The presence of the videos created a dispute on 4chan, leading to various flame wars and hacking incidents among factions that claimed to either support or oppose Boxxy.[3][4] This led to a denial of service attack on 4chan itself, shutting the site down for several hours.[2] Participants went elsewhere, launching a "Twitter bomb" that May.[5] On YouTube, the popular Boxxy channel was hacked and the source's identity outed.[6] A number of spoofs, parody videos, and remixes were posted throughout the web.[4][6][2]

In 2010, Urlesque named Boxxy number 104 on its list of "The 100 Most Iconic Internet Videos".[7] In late 2010, Wayne began selling Boxxy items on eBay.[8]

On January 10, 2011, she posted a new, more introspective video[9] onto a new YouTube account (ANewHopeee)[10] in-which she tells that Boxxy is a made-up character and that she acts. This video caused some discussions on its authenticity.[11][8] On January 19, 2011, Boxxy was mentioned in a local Fox 11 report on Internet trolls.[12]

On June 17, 2011, Wayne made a third YouTube account (Bodaciousboxxy)[13] and continued uploading videos of herself. [14] In this video she claims that the Boxxy in the video of January 2011 is not the real Boxxy, but a girl who looks a lot like her, who was supposedly hacked by a character named "Svetlana". In actuality, Boxxy and Svetlana both are Wayne herself, made evident by the copyright notice in her video descriptions: "© 2011 Catie Wayne (ANewHopeee/Boxxybabee/bodaciousboxxy) All rights reserved.",[15] and confirmed by Wayne in a later video.

On July 21, 2011, she made a new video called "Calm Down, Holden." on the ANewHopeee channel clarifying that Boxxy and Svetlana are just characters created by her and thanking her fans for all their support. Flame War II had broke out throughout many message boards such as 4chan, reddit, and many others. The two main factions were those who enjoyed Boxxy's videos, and those who don't.

Videography

On the the videos depict Wayne in heavy eyeliner[8][3][16] rambling excitedly about various things while displaying "ridiculous" and possibly "fake" odd personality quirks.[11][2] They were originally posted to Gaia Online early in 2008, reposted to the site i-am-bored.com later in the year, and then eventually appeared on 4chan's "/b/" message board.

Wayne currently publishes videos to YouTube under the aliases boxxybabee, ANewHopeee and bodaciousboxxy. She has previously published videos using two other accounts, S4TISFACTION and boxxybabe, both of which are now inactive. The following table contains a selection of videos and films in which Wayne has appeared in, or is expected to appear in.
