Bleienbach is a municipality in the Oberaargau administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Bleienbach has an area, as of 2009, of 5.69 km2 (2.20 sq mi). Of this area, 3.25 km2 (1.25 sq mi) or 57.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.88 km2 (0.73 sq mi) or 33.0% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.47 km2 (0.18 sq mi) or 8.3% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.09 km2 (22 acres) or 1.6% is either rivers or lakes.[3]

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 3.5% and transportation infrastructure made up 4.2%. 32.7% of the total land area is heavily forested. Of the agricultural land, 41.1% is used for growing crops and 14.6% is pastures, while 1.4% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.[3]

Demographics

Bleienbach has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 655.[1] As of 2007, 6.5% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has shrunk at a rate of -1.3%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (95.7%), with Serbo-Croatian being second most common ( 0.8%) and French being third ( 0.7%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 49% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (25.7%), the FDP (8.2%) and the Green Party (7.6%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 22.7% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 63.9% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 13.4%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Bleienbach about 75.8% of the population (between age 25–64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).

Bleienbach has an unemployment rate of 0.77%. As of 2005, there were 68 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 21 businesses involved in this sector. 501 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 13 businesses in this sector. 118 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 15 businesses in this sector.[4]
