Bjerkvik is a village in the municipality of Narvik, Norway. Its population (2005) is 1,220[1]. Bjerkvik is located at the head of Herjangsfjorden, an arm of Ofotfjord in the northeastern corner of Nordland county. There is less than 20 km to the border with Troms. During WW2 Bjerkvik was almost flattened by gunfire from allied warships with significant civilian casualties [1].
The worst avalanche disaster in modern Norwegian history took place in Vassdalen near Bjerkvik in March 1986 when 16 Norwegian soldiers on exercise were killed.
