Birnagar (Bengali: বীরনগর) is a city and a municipality under Taherpur police station of Ranaghat subdivision in Nadia district in the state of West Bengal, India.[1]

Previously an island in the Hooghly River, Birnagar Municipality is more than 200 years old. The first chairman of the Birnagar Municipality was Kabi Nabinchandra Sen.
Before British colonization, Birnagar was called Ula. The "Ula" name is still present in the names of some local institutions, such as the library and hospital.
It is mentioned in the short story Post Master by Rabindranath Tagore and in the novel Aporajito by Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay.
It earlier had two zamindars. One part of Birnagar belonged to the Mukherjees, and the other part belonged to the Mustafis.
The Gamchha, a handloom towel used by the Bengalis, was invented in Palitpara, Birnagar.

Birnagar has an average literacy rate of 70%, which is much higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 76% and female literacy of 65%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Birnagar is famous for the Ulai Chandi puja. This puja Is 150 years old. This puja lasts a full day. The following day the Ulai Chandi fair takes place at Birnagar bindabasini fairground.
Birnagar is also the locale of the "Jaghadatri puja", and the famed 'Durga puja', which is 350 years old.
In the Mustafi Jamidar Bari, there is a tradition that the men and boys of the house have to be ready to play the dhak for the beginning of the Sondhy Pujo. One of them goes to the roof of the big gate at the village's entrance and shouts 'Bajao', which is the cue for all of the men and boys to begin playing the dhaks, and the Sondhy Pujo begins. From 2005,till now the "Jaghadatri puja" is celebrating with much enthusiasm."vasan" is so popular that people come across Birnagar. From 2010,BIRNAGAR UTSHAB UJJAPON COMMITTEE is organizing the "BIRNAGAR UTSHAB" at Library Moidan. Every year Birnagar Football Tournament is organized where many established club team participates.
Birnagar is ranked highest in all of India for education. There are two high schools, one for boys and one for girls. There is only one intermediate school and there are several primary schools.
The Birnagar high school (BHS) was established by Nilkantho Mukhopadhay over sixty years ago and Shivkali Girls' High School........ We have 14 primary schools in 14 words. We have a privet run C.B.S.C. school also. The environment of education is our pride.
