Big Brother 3 was the third series of Big Brother UK. The series started on 24 May 2002, ending on 26 July 2002 and the final of this series drew 10.0 million viewers. Votes in the final week totalled 8.6 million.[1] This series of Big Brother is often credited with the demise of Channel 4 soap Brookside, which, even though prior to Big Brother 3 had been moved around the schedules, was shunted about a lot more than it had ever been before in order to accommodate Channel 4's new ratings winner, which averaged 5.8 million viewers in this series.

No housemates from this series entered the 2010 Ultimate Big Brother, the final ever Big Brother series to be aired on Channel 4. However a tribute was shown on the finale to honour Jade Goody.

Timeline

The third series saw two early walkouts by housemates Sunita and Sandy. Sandy surprised his fellow housemates (as well as the production team) by urinating in a bin, scaling a wall and escaping over a roof while the rest of the housemates watched the England v Nigeria World Cup group game.[2] Sunita was replaced by Sophie, and Sandy by Tim. At the end of week two, the house was divided into a 'rich' and a 'poor' side for 29 days. Those on the rich side had more luxuries and better food than the other. A weekly task, shown live on Saturday nights, determined which housemates lived on which side of the dividing bars.

Housemates

12 housemates entered the house on Day 1, more than in previous series. For the first time ever, a live launch presented by Davina McCall marked the show's premiere, with Davina giving a quick tour of the house, and the housemates entering the house live to a crowd and press. On Day 7, Sunita walked and was later replaced with Sophie on Day 10. On Day 20, Sandy escaped by climbing over the roof. Tim replaced him on Day 24.

Adele

Adele Roberts (born 9 March 1979) is a DJ from Southport.[3] She was the first girl to enter the house on Day 1. While in the house, she attracted the attention of both Lee and Alex, only to tell them that she had a girlfriend on the outside. During her time in the house she formed strong bonds with Jade and Alex. On Day 44, she was evicted to a booing crowd. Since leaving the house she has had steady work hosting her own radio show: in 2002, she started presenting The Smooth Grooves Show on 97.4 Rock FM. She then moved to The Galaxy Network in 2008, and presented the late show, Sunday to Thursday 10pm-1am.[4] In 2007, she made a brief return to the house with Alex, during one of the tasks in Big Brother 8.[4] From January 2011, she was the Sunday morning presenter on Capital Yorkshire in Leeds, and covered on Capital North East in Newcaslte. Presently, since August 2011 she covers on BBC Radio 1Xtra in London and Juice FM in Liverpool.

Alex

Alex Sibley (born 21 March 1979) entered the house on Day 1.[5] He is a model from London. During his time in the house, he was attracted to Adele until he found out that she had a girlfriend on the outside. He is mostly remembered for his obsession with cleanliness and one moment when he hid behind a door, miming the words to KC & The Sunshine Band's hit That's the Way (I Like It). This resulted in him, since leaving the house, appearing in a "Domestos" commercial. He was also the creator of the (now infamous) game "Follow The Van", where a person had to follow a plastic van (from a Sugar Puffs box) around someone's body and kiss wherever it stopped. In an interview, he revealed that he has since lost the van. On Day 64, Alex left the house, finishing in 3rd place. In Big Brother 8, Alex briefly returned to the house after appearing in a "time-traveller" task with fellow housemate Adele, in which two of the then current housemates travelled back to 2002 and completed a series of tasks.[6] In 2009, Alex reappeared on Big Brother 10 as part of a task celebrating 10 years of Big Brother. He challenged his former fellow housemates Lee and Sophie to an egg and spoon race. Rodrigo Lopes had to predict who would win. Although Rodrigo predicted Alex, Lee won.

Alison

Alison Hammond (born 5 February 1975) was a travel rep from Birmingham. She entered the house on Day 1. Alison is most remembered for the time where she jumped on a garden table, only for it to break under her weight. While in the house she formed close friendships with Kate and Jonny. Alison was evicted on Day 15. Since leaving the house, Alison has appeared on many television programmes, including losing the most amount of weight on Celebrity Fit Club and losing a challenge on Celebrities Under Pressure. She has also appeared on Celebrity Stars in Their Eyes (performing as Nina Simone), Celebrity Ready Steady Cook, as a panellist on ITV's Loose Women, as a presenter on the short-lived ITV Play channel and in 2004, she played herself in Christmas Lights opposite Robson Green.[4] She now has a full-time presenting job on This Morning. She has recently been on the Reality TV Show I'm a Celebrity becoming a late arrival.

Jade

Jade Goody (5 June 1981 – 22 March 2009) was a dental nurse from Bermondsey. She entered the house on Day 1. On Day 13, she celebrated her 21st birthday. While in the house, she grew close to Kate, Alex, Adele and Spencer in particular. On Day 31, she received one strike for talking about nominations. Prior to this, she had received five warnings about her rule-breaking. She argued in the house with Kate, Jonny and Adele. She had a very apparent dislike for housemate Sophie and resented her relationship with Lee. She is most remembered for her lack of general knowledge and quotes such as "Rio De Janeiro - ain't that a person?", "East Angular? That's abroad!" and "Am I minging" (in reference to a verruca on her foot).[7] In 2003, her argument with Adele was publicly voted as the No.1 Best Bit of Big Brother. She left the house on Day 64, in 4th place, but went on to become the most successful former Big Brother housemate to date. After leaving the house, she opened a beauty salon ("Ugly"), starred in numerous reality TV shows, made four fitness DVDs[8] and wrote her autobiography, entitled "Jade: My Autobiography", published by HarperCollins.[9] In 2004, she returned to the house to appear in Big Brother Panto, with fellow housemates Tim and Spencer, where she played the part of Cinderella. In 2007, she entered the house for a third time, this time for Celebrity Big Brother, but when in the house, her actions caused a media furore on the grounds of perceived racism. In August 2008, she became a contestant in the second series of the Indian version of Big Brother (called Bigg Boss); however, she was forced to leave on day 2 after being told she had cancer.[10] She died as a result of cervical cancer on 22 March 2009.[11]

Jonny

Jonathon "Jonny" Regan (born 14 October 1972) is a former fireman from Trimdon, County Durham, who worked in nearby Peterlee. He entered the house on Day 1, bonding with Kate, PJ and Alison while in the house. On Day 29, he received one strike for crossing the divide. He, along with Alison, openly admitted to urinating in the shower, much to the disgust of Alex, resulting in Alex nominating both of them for eviction in Week 2. On Day 29, he received one strike for stealing a bar of chocolate from the rich side. While in the house he argued with Jade and Alex. On Day 64, he was last person to leave the house, before Kate, coming in as runner-up. Since leaving the house, he co presented on TFM Radio during afternoons, after name dropping the station during his Big Brother appearance, he then went on to pursue acting, now going by the name Jonathon. In 2006, he appeared in adverts for British Gas, and is currently on the sponsor adverts for Skybet during Premier League Darts coverage on Sky Sports.[4] On July 29, 2011, he appeared in a small role in Coronation Street.[1] [2]

Kate

Kate Lawler (born 7 May 1980) is an IT helper and part time model from Beckenham, south east London. Her twin sister Karen convinced her to apply for the show. While in the house she grew close to Alison, Jonny, Jade (who she had met at auditions) and Spencer. She is most remembered in the house for her drunken antics. On Day 20, she received one strike for crossing over from the poor side to the rich side, although she says that Spencer pulled her over. While in the house she argued with Jade and Alex. On Day 64, she left the house as the winner. Since leaving the house with the £70,000 prize money, she has enjoyed steady work in television and became a DJ on Capital FM, a position she held until December 2003. After leaving the house, she had a short-lived relationship with fellow housemate, Spencer. She has also engaged in a very publicised feud with Jade Goody. In 2007, Kate appeared on the BBC comedy Rob Brydon's Annually Retentive. She co-presented the Kerrang! Radio breakfast show, The Morning After alongside Tim Shaw 7am-10am and now presents the drivetime show 4pm-7pm. On 26 January 2008, Kate returned to Big Brother as a hijacker for a day, in the new show Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack.[4]

Lee

Lee Davey (born 30 May 1980, Leicester) entered the house on Day 1. At the time Lee, a personal trainer and keen bodybuilder who also bore a strong resemblance to former heavyweight boxing champ Mike Tyson, turned out to be quite the ladies man. While in the house, Lee was involved in a love triangle after expressing lust for fellow housemate Adele only to find out she was bisexual and had a girlfriend on the outside. The day after finding this out, Sophie entered the house as Sunita's replacement. He immediately began to flirt with her, despite already having a girlfriend himself on the outside, named Carmen. Lee and Sophie later went on to get married and have a child named Max. They also filmed a Sky One show called Big Brother's Little Wedding. Unfortunately, the marriage was short-lived and they subsequently divorced in 2006. On Day 22, Lee was evicted, losing out to Jonny.[12] On 31 August 2002, Lee appeared as a stripper with The Dream Boys for one night. His audition tape had included a caption of himself stripping off in a secluded park, showing off his fine physique. Lee claimed to be able to bench press well over 100 kg, making him potentially the strongest ever BB housemate. In 2007 Lee started a 4-year Sport Studies degree at The University of Northampton. In 2009 he made a guest appearance on Big Brother 10 as part of a task celebrating 10 years of Big Brother. He challenged his former fellow housemates Alex and Sophie to an egg and spoon race. Rodrigo Lopes had to predict who would win. Although Rodrigo predicted Alex, Lee won. He now lives in Thatcham Berkshire, owns a number of gyms and works in Reading. Despite being born and bred in Leicestershire, bizarrely Lee is a massive Newcastle United fan.

Lynne

Lynne Moncrieff (born 6 February 1966, Aberdeen) entered the house on Day 1. She is an art student. While in the house, she expressed an extreme dislike for Spencer. In Week 1, the public had voted for her and Jade to face eviction. On Day 8, she was evicted by a unanimous vote from her fellow housemates. As she was evicted from the house a man in the booing crowd jumped over the barrier and ran at her, but was restrained by security. She recently worked at Aberdeen's Art Gallery but now lives in London.

PJ

Peter James "PJ" Ellis (born 10 August 1979 Birmingham) entered the house on Day 1. His time in the house is best remembered for his night in bed with Jade - dubbed 'PJ the BJ by the media. He ignored Jade the next morning. PJ attended Archbishop Grimshaw School, Chelmsley Wood, Birmingham, UK, leaving in 1997. He graduated from the University of Birmingham with a degree in Law and completed a Legal Practice Course at the same university. He is now working as a commercial lawyer in Bournemouth, UK. PJ was evicted from the Big Brother house on Day 51. PJ now works at Weightmans in Birmingham.

Sandy

Sandy Cumming (born 12 January 1959) is a woman's personal shopper from Scotland. While in the house, he isolated himself from the group, making friends with Alex, Lynne, Adele and, to an extent, Jade. On Day 20, after urinating in a bin, he left the house by climbing over the wall as the others watched a football match.[13] On Day 24, he was replaced by Tim. Sandy now works as a Community Police Officer.

Sophie

Sophie Pritchard (born 9 June 1977) entered the house on Day 10, as Sunita's replacement. She works in a recruitment agency and is from Marlow. She grew a strong bond with Lee, while in the house, also making friends with Kate and Jonny. On Day 17, Sophie celebrated her 25th birthday. She made an enemy in Jade, who resented her upbringing and relationship with Lee, however she appeared on Sky News on March 22, 2009 - the day Jade died - reflecting on Jade's life in the public eye. On Day 36, she was evicted. After coming out of the house she and Lee got married and had a baby together. However, in 2006 they split. In 2009 Sophie reappeared on Big Brother 10 as part of a task celebrating 10 years of Big Brother. She challenged her former fellow housemates Alex and Lee to an egg and spoon race. Rodrigo Lopes had to predict who would win. Although Rodrigo predicted Alex, Lee won. Sophie is now training to be an Art teacher.
