The Eagle Pencil Company was founded by Daniel Berolzheimer, a Bavarian immigrant, in 1856 opening a pencil shop in New York City. Further acquisitions on a world-wide basis meant that the Eagle Pencil name no longer fitted a Company with such a diverse product range, therefore 1969 saw a name change to Berol Limited.[1] [2] [3] In 1986, Empire bought the Berol Corporation making an office supply superpower swimming in pencils, which was then called "Empire-Berol". In 1995, the Sanford Corporation (which has been a division of Newell Rubbermaid since 1992) acquired Empire-Berol, where it has remained since. [4] The brand is now marketed as Berol by Papermate
