Benedict Taylor (musician)

Benedict Taylor (born 1982) is a British musician who studied viola at the Royal Northern College of Music (2000-2004) with Roger Bigley - Lindsay Quartet, Thomas Riebl, Steve Berry (improvisation), Chris Rowland (chamber music). From 2008-2010, he then read ethnomusicology at Goldsmiths, University of London.

The central focus of his work is in the performance of music of the 20th century, newly composed music and improvised music, working as a performer and collaborator with artists including; Lawrence Upton,[1] Javier Carmona & Oso Records, Alex Ward, Daniel Thompson, Alison Blunt, Terry Day, Leon Michener, Tom Jackson (including Jackson & Taylor Duo), Jody K. Jenkins (Lipstikka - Jonathan Sagall, 2011),[2] Eugenio Colombo, Mark Sanders, Francesco Hoch, Noel Taylor, Alberto Popolla, Redstart (trio), Noura Sanatian, Paul Pieroni/SPACE & Wysing Arts Centre,[3] Dane Hurst & Rambert Dance Company, David Leahy, Lucy Railton, Newton Armstrong, Jordan Hunt, Slavko Zagorac, Stephen Crowe, London Improvisers Orchestra, Berlin Improvisers Orchestra, Kammer Klang Players, London Contemporary Orchestra, London Sinfonietta Collective. Past festival appearances include; Aldeburgh Festival, Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte - Montepulciano, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival/BBC Radio 3, Resonance FM. Artistic residencies held between 2007 - 2011 include; Mehli Mehta Music Foundation - Mumbai & Aldeburgh Music.

In 2009/10 he initiated many composition projects both in the UK and abroad, scoring and creating the soundtracks for That Girl in Yellow Boots[4] (dir. Anurag Kashyap),[5] Harud (dir. Aamir Bashir)[6] - both in collaboration with Naren Chandavarkar and Suhaas Ahuja, Waves of Power (Rajesh Thind & National Maritime Museum 2011),[7] Presage (Maria Guerberof 2010) - Collaborating with Alison Blunt, with screenings at film festivals in 2010/11 including Venice, London, Toronto, Mumbai & Rotterdam, to widespread critical acclaim.[8][9][10] In 2010/2011 he founded Cram Collective, a contemporary music group, which investigates both conventional and experimental composition, improvisation and performance techniques, engaging with varying independent music projects alongside international commissions. The group is notable for working across geographical, cultural, media & artistic boundaries.
