The Bekins Company
The Bekins Company was founded as Bekins Van Lines in 1891 by Martin and John Bekins in Sioux City, Iowa. The company soon established branches on the west coast and the Chicago, Illinois area. It claims to have developed containerization in 1920, and to have conducted the first transcontinental move by motor van in 1928. The company was acquired by GeoLogistics Corporation in 1995 and became an agent-owned company in 2002, making it a form of cooperative. The Bekins Company is based in Hillside, Illinois.
Pop culture
- In Legally Blonde, Elle Woods, played by Reese Witherspoon, moved to Harvard using The Bekins Company.
- In The American President, Sydney Ellen Wade moved to Washington, and her things are moved in boxes marked "Benkins".
- In the film version of the musical Hello Dolly a horse drawn "Bekins Moving & Storage Co" wagon is shown in the opening sequence set at New York City in 1890. As the company did not exist in this location at this time, this reference is an anachronism.
