In 1972, the county purchase the land on which the center is built. The land is known as "Hashawha," which in Native American means "old fields."[4]
The Hashawha Tower is a windmill that was donated to the Hashawha Bear Branch Nature Center in Westminster, Maryland. Standing at about 10 m (35 ft) tall, there are pegs on the side to climb up on, and there is a very small observation deck at the top, about 9 square feet (0.84 m2). The tower is very stable, however, because it is bolted into the concrete below. It stands outside of the Algonquin Building, in the parking lot.
