The Battle of Furnes was fought on 20 August 1297 between French and Flemish forces.
The French were led by Robert II of Artois and the Flemish by Guy of Dampierre. The French forces were victorious. However, Robert's son Philip was badly injured, and died of the effects a year later.[1]
The Flemish were supported by Walram, Count of Jülich, who was brutally murdered by the French after surrendering. This act was against all conventions of the time and was one of the reasons why the Flemish under his nephew William of Jülich gave no quarter in the Battle of the Golden Spurs 5 years later.
