The museum's building was originally a 13th-century Hafsid palace, located in the the-suburbs of Tunis.
It contains a major collection of Roman mosaics and other antiquities of interest from Ancient Greece, Tunisia, and from the Islamic period.
The museum displays objects ranging from pre-historical artefacts to modern jewellery.
As of 11 December 2010, the museum was under reconstruction so most of the collection was packed away. There were a large number of mosaics and a few statues and busts to see, but no pre-historic artefacts or jewellery were on display.
