Bannwil is a municipality in the Oberaargau administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Bannwil has an area, as of 2009, of 4.79 km2 (1.85 sq mi). Of this area, 2.2 km2 (0.85 sq mi) or 45.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while1.88 km2 (0.73 sq mi) or 39.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.42 km2 (0.16 sq mi) or 8.8% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.24 km2 (0.093 sq mi) or 5.0% is either rivers or lakes and 0.01 km2 (2.5 acres) or 0.2% is unproductive land.[3]

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 4.8% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.3%.. 37.2% of the total land area is heavily forested and 2.1% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 33.6% is used for growing crops and 10.9% is pastures, while 1.5% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.[3]

Demographics

Bannwil has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 673.[1] As of 2007, 5.8% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has shrunk at a rate of -1.5%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (96.5%), with Serbo-Croatian being second most common ( 1.3%) and Albanian being third ( 1.1%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 47.7% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (20.1%), the FDP (12.8%) and local small right-wing parties (6.6%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 23.2% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 59.7% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 17.1%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Bannwil about 78.9% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).

Bannwil has an unemployment rate of 1.56%. As of 2005, there were 38 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 14 businesses involved in this sector. 26 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 7 businesses in this sector. 57 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 18 businesses in this sector.[4]
