Bankia is a Spanish banking conglomerate that was formed in December 2010, consolidating the operations of seven regional savings banks into the first Spanish bank with national scope.,[1] Bankia reports a total business volume of 486 billion with total assets of €328 billion.

History

Bankia was formed on December 3, 2010 as a result of the union of seven Spanish financial institutions, with major presence in their areas of influence. The merger of the seven savings banks, known as 'cold fusion', took only four months, with the integration contract being signed on July 30, 2010. The merged entity is controlled by Caja Madrid. Business Area

Bankia operates in the retail banking, corporate banking, corporate finance, capital markets, assets management and private banking, offering a wide range of financial products and services to its customers, both domestically and internationally.

The entity has an extensive branch network across Spains as well as a presence in Beijing, Dublin, Lisbon, London, Miami, Milan, Munich, Oporto, Paris, Shanghai, Warsaw and Vienna.

The Group has a large and diversified portfolio of business stockholdings with a value of €5,500 million as of January 31, 2011.

Headquarters

The new bank has its registered office and address of the subsidiaries in Valencia (Spain) while its operational headquarters are in Madrid. It also has an international presence in the following countries: Germany, Austria, China, France, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom and the United States.

Shares of Bankia began trading on the Bolsa de Madrid on 20 July 2011, under the symbol BKIA.
