Bangalore Medical College (Kannada:ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಮಹಾವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ), now renamed Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (Kannada:ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಮಹಾವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಶೋಧನಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರ), popularly known as BMC, is a medical college run by the Government of Karnataka. It is located on K.R. Road, near City Market. It is the only government medical college in Bangalore and one of 10 in Karnataka. BMC is an autonomous institution under the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Jayanagar, Bangalore.

History

It was established in 1955 by Dr. Shivram and Dr. Mekhri in what was then the fort police station ground. The college was initially run by the Mysore Medical Education Society and was later handed over to the Government of Karnataka. It was built by civil engineer & architect, Mr. V. Ramamoorthy, who built it in a record time of 6 months.[1]

From its inception, the college has been associated with some of the most eminent doctors in India. It has become the most coveted destination for medical aspirants in the state of Karnataka to study medicine and has been consistently ranked among the top fifteen medical colleges in India. It was ranked 14 in 2007.

It celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2005-2006 with major renovation and the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Digital Library and Basavarajendra Auditorium. In 2006, the college was granted the prestigious Autonomous status by the Government of Karnataka.[2] The college is presently undergoing major renovation along the lines of AIIMS.[3]

Upgrade of the Institute to the level of AIIMS

Work on upgrade of the college to the level of AIIMS started in March 2007. Under the 1.2 billion Rupees centrally funded project upgrade work is taking place in the college as well as all the affiliated hospitals.[4] The proposed upgrades include[5]

Apart from this, it is involved in community health facilities like Nelamangala Taluk Hospital, the Urban family welfare center on Siddaiah road and primary health centers in Pavgada, Sundekoppa, K. G. Halli and Hessarghatta.As a part of Rural Outreach Specialist doctors are sent by the college to these rural centres every month. The teaching hospitals attached to Bangalore Medical College have more than 3000 beds. Apart from undergraduate courses, postgraduate courses are available in most specialities. A state-of-the-art burns department caters to all of Karnataka.

Undergraduate Courses

M.B.B.S.

The college offers the four and a half year M.B.B.S. course with a one year compulsory rotating internship in affiliated hospitals. There are 250 seats of which 85% admissions are through Karnataka CET at the state level and 15% through AIPMT at the national level. Admission is extremely competitive.

Paramedical Courses

There are 420 seats. Eligibility: PUC/Class 12 or equivalent pass

Post-Graduate Courses

The college offers 150 seats for post graduate courses.

  1. 50% of seats – RGUHS PGCET (state level)
  2. 50% of seats – All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination (national level)

Hostels

The college does not have hostels on its campus. The undergraduate men's hostel is located near Central College, Bangalore and the women's undergraduate hostel is located on the campus of Vani Vilas Women's and Children's Hospital. The post-graduate hostel is located in Chamarajpet.
